Dr. Senjuti Saha, Deputy Executive Director at CHRF, recently joined the Neurology Podcast with Dr. Deanna Saylor to discuss her viewpoint in The Lancet Digital Health, titled “Overcoming Colonialism in Pathogen Genomics.”
In the episode, Dr. Saha explored two key topics: colonialism in global health and the importance of pathogen genomics. She highlighted both the progress made and the challenges faced by the Global South in this field, pointing out how global health continues to be shaped by power imbalances where resources, decision-making, and knowledge remain concentrated in the Global North, while the communities most affected by disease are often sidelined.
She also emphasized the urgent need for stronger collaboration among scientists, policymakers, and governments to build and strengthen local capacity for pathogen genomics—so that research can be done in the community, by the community, and for the community.
